Pure Tung Oil was brought to the Western world from China around the year 1900. This oil in pure form creates a solid high-resistant finish once it has been applied to a wooden object. While pure oil will darken slightly with age, it does not darken as much as other oils. Pure oil is popular in China, and it has been used in China for thousands of years to finish a number of wooden objects. Pure oil can even be applied to seaworthy vessels in order to effectively seal outer wood.

Tung oil, also known as China Wood Oil, Lumbang oil, Noix d’abrasin (fr.) or simply wood oil, is made from the seed kernels of the Tung tree (Aleurites fordii and Aleurites montana, family Euphorbiaceae).

Tung oil was used as a preservative for wood ships. The oil penetrates the wood, then hardens to form an impermeable hydrophobic layer (repels water) up to 5 mm into the wood. As a preservative it is effective for exterior work above and below ground, but the thin layer makes it less useful in practice.
